What to write in a gift note when “hope you like it” feels too small.

Use a detail, a reason, and a wish to write a note that sounds like you.

Flowers and cake at a garden celebration

Start with something you noticed

Name a real detail instead of reaching for a grand compliment. “You always make room for one more person at your table” says more than “You are amazing.” Think of a small recent moment, a habit you appreciate, or something the person told you. Keep it true and specific enough that the note could only belong to them.

Connect the gift to the person

Explain the link in plain language. “You mentioned wanting to draw again, so I chose this little sketchbook for your bag.” If the gift is an experience, describe the moment you hope to share. You do not need to explain what you spent, defend the choice, or promise that the present will change their life.

Finish with a small wish

A warm ending can be simple: “I hope this gives you a few quiet pages to yourself,” or “Here’s to another evening laughing over a game.” Make invitations clear and optional. Avoid messages that ask for a particular reaction, request a public thank-you, or turn the gift into an obligation to improve a skill or habit.

Try three complete examples

For a host: “You made everyone feel at home tonight. This tea is for a morning when someone else makes the plans.” For a teacher: “The way you welcomed questions helped our child feel comfortable trying. Thank you for that patience.” For a friend: “This photograph still makes me smile. I love that an ordinary afternoon became one of my favorite memories.”

Edit until it sounds like you

Read the note aloud. Replace anything you would never say in conversation. Two sincere sentences are enough; a longer letter is welcome when you have a story to tell. If a child wants help, ask what they would like to say and keep their words. Date the note, sign it, and let it be a gift without a required reply.
