A party the host gets to enjoy, too.
Five decisions that reduce the work once the doorbell rings.

Set up one self-serve spot
Put cups, drinks, napkins and water in one clear place away from the main cooking area. Label anything guests might otherwise have to ask about. Keep a cloth nearby for small spills.
Choose a menu with a stopping point
Avoid a menu that requires you to cook each guest’s food individually throughout the party. Make-ahead dishes and a simple buffet give you a chance to sit down. Follow the recipe’s safe storage and serving guidance.
Plan the end as well as the start
Set aside containers for leftovers, identify recycling, and accept a specific offer of cleanup help. Decide what can wait until morning. Before anyone leaves, spend a few minutes with them instead of disappearing into the kitchen.
Put a good idea into your next plan.
Keep the dates, the gifts, and the little details together.
